Bio

Sarah Buckner teaches courses in African Diasporic and queer literatures of the 19th and 20th centuries. Sitting at the nexus of Black Studies, affect theory, and literary studies, her current book project, “Exposed Flesh: A Literary History of Black Being” theorizes Black affect through a long history of exposure and public display. Using an archive of Black women’s literature in the Caribbean and the U.S, “Exposed Flesh” argues that the particular vulnerability of Black(female)ness alters consciousness, charting the world through an intuitive, sensational knowledge which mingles with but also exceeds conventional knowledge systems.
