English Professor Earns NEH Grant

Professor Stephen Karian was recently awarded a twelve-month fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

This Fellowship will allow him to work full time in the 2022-23 academic year on his new project, editing Alexander Pope’s miscellany poems for the Oxford Edition of the Writings of Alexander Pope being published by Oxford University Press.

This edition will showcase non-canonical aspects of this most canonical English poet. Pope excluded these miscellany poems from his authorized collections, allowing them to circulate anonymously in printed and manuscript texts.

"There’s much to be learned about when and why Pope wrote these poems, how he revised them, when and why he decided to publish them, and what they meant to his contemporaries. In short, there are hundreds of textual and contextual puzzles to be unraveled, and I'm looking forward to tackling this challenge." – Dr. Stephen Karian
