Course Description

Creative nonfiction, or the essay in its many forms, is an artful engagement with life and the places in which we live. Nonfiction can do work at the individual and community level, enacting change through reflection and exploration. In this course, we’ll explore the possibilities of the genre through a variety of texts—including personal essay, collage forms, and literary journalism—and think about the ways they both shape and make sense of the world. Through reading various creative nonfiction and craft essays, engaging in discussion, and prompt writing, we will build foundational knowledge of writing creative nonfiction narratives, the basic vocabulary of the genre, and various elements of craft. Later in the course, we will transition to instructor-facilitated peer workshop and student-led essay discussions. Students will have the opportunity to write and workshop two original essays, present an outside essay of their choice, and practice revision.
