Course Description

This course introduces some of the essential topics in morphology (the structure of words) and syntax (the structure of sentences) through problem-solving and analysis. Students will learn to construct linguistic arguments by analyzing morphosyntactic patterns of languages from around the world. The course prepares students to be able to analyze and discuss grammatical patterns in any language. Course meetings will involve a mix of lexture, problem-solving, and practice writing short linguistic descriptions and analyses. Working in small groups, students will complete a final project that involves producing an original morphosyntactic description and analysis of an understudied language.
