Course Description

ENG 4040/7040: Writing Social Change focuses on how people—individuals and collectives— write with, about, and for social justice as rhetorical agents, attempting to shift public culture. In this course, we will explore the intersections of social change and writing with consideration of the role of rhetoric in theorizing, organizing, and studying social change. By examining the work of scholars, activists, and community organizers, we’ll unpack how rhetorics, narratives, frameworks, and genres of resistance, justice, and change operate in writing. With an emphasis on contemporary social movements, we’ll consider how writing and rhetorical artifacts are shaped by the identities and positionalities of those who create them, the rhetorical situations in which they act, and the values that ground them.
