Course Description

This course--taught synchronously online--will survey the history of animation, with attention to theoretical and critical discussions of authorship, style (realism, experimentalism), technological developments, industrial and independent production, issues in representation, and reception. Much of the course will focus on the development of animation within the Hollywood studio system, but we will also view international films and discuss global trends including Japanese anime and traditions of animation in Europe, Canada, and elsewhere. Students will write weekly short papers on films and readings, create one short animation project, and present on films viewed outside of class.
