In this introduction to writing poetry, we will consider what poetry is and why it matters, both as a form of writing and as a means of expression. Students will read, listen to, discuss, and perform existing poems as models and inspiration for their own writing. Together we’ll consider what makes a poem a poem by exploring the possibilities for creating meaning through rhythm, sound, image, voice, and metaphor. Ideally students will develop an appreciation for this diverse and versatile art form.
