Internships at the Missouri Review provide students valuable hands-on experience in publishing. The course content for the internship class (ENGL 4950/7950) covers editing, manuscript acquisition, magazine distribution, and promotion. From their first day, interns become an integral part of the magazine’s operations. The Missouri Review is a leading national literary magazine with a reputation for discovering new writers, embracing new media, and training undergraduate and graduate students for today’s publishing world. An intern’s primary responsibility is reading and assessing manuscripts submitted for publication across the genres of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

Interns can also gain experience and training in other aspects of publishing. Those with an interest in technology can undertake web development projects, assist in producing the audio version of the print magazine, or contribute to the promotion of TMR and its contributors through social media posts. Students help run and promote literary contests, organize literary events, or learn and practice grant writing. The editors encourage individual initiative and foster supportive, enthusiastic teamwork; they also represent a rich resource, with decades of experience in editing and publishing. Alumni from this internship regularly go on to work in New York publishing, small press publishing, business, arts nonprofits, and academia.
