Course Description

The Modernists waged a successful publicity campaign to distance themselves from the Victorian poets whose influence shaped every dimension of their craft. It has taken decades of scholarship to undo that perception and resurrect the lines of filiation running into the 20th century from the 19th. This seminar surveys Victorian, Decadent, and Modernist poetry through specific genres shared between the two eras, including dramatic monologue, ballad and song, ekphrasis and portraiture, sonnet, epitaph and elegy, religious poetry, and the sequence or cycle. Course work includes short papers and presentations and a final project with a research component.
