Theory and Practice of Composition
Theory and Practice of Composition
ENG 8010 will provide you a theoretical and practical background for developing writing courses and teaching writers. We’ll consider questions such as: what do we (rhetoric, writing studies, and composition teacher-scholars) value about writing? how are these values reflected in the pedagogical approaches we’re studying and practicing? We’ll discuss curricular, pedagogical, and theoretical contexts that shape teaching, writing, and learning as a way to develop our own writing pedagogies.
Through this course, we will learn how to teach a first-year writing course that meets program goals and builds on your expertise and knowledge; design clear and scaffolded writing assignments that promote student engagement and growth over time and meet course outcomes; design and facilitate effective daily learning activities that combine a variety of teaching and learning modes, methods, and materials to foster an inclusive community of writers; respond to student writing rhetorically, equitably, and strategically; reflect on your own goals, learning, and teaching to support your continuing professional development as a teacher.
