Course Description

This course is for experienced and committed poets of all sorts and styles looking to expand their range as writers, readers, and editors in a rigorous and supportive environment. As a class, we will produce and workshop individual poems with an eye toward creating chapbooks in which those individual poems add up to more than the sum of their parts. We will also spend significant time considering how poems, even when personal, can derive from material and sources from beyond our own lives or lived experience. To that end, we will read as inspiration dynamic researched poetry by contemporary writers as varied as Billy-Ray Belcourt, Linda Bierds, Louise Erdrich, Robin Coste Lewis, Adrian Matejka, Paisley Rekdal, Gjertrud Schnackenberg, Karen Solie, and Natasha Trethewey.
