This semester, we will focus on the literature of transformation, from science fiction and fantasy to realistic literary representations of cultural and political shifts. Texts will include: Cosmicomics by Italo Calvino, Fieldwork in Ukrainian Sex by Oksana Zabuzhko, selected stories by Ursula K. LeGuin, the play Father Comes Home from the Wars by Suzan-Lori Parks, the short story collection Lot by Bryan Washington, and a recent Nebula-nominated s/f novella (to be determined at a later date). You will write a number of individual and collaborative stories, participate in small group and full class workshops, write an expanded story based on one of your earlier exercises, and produce a revision of that story as your final project.
