Course Description

Troll wars, hackers, election interference, fake news, dwindling resources on a warming planet. Some have warned of a new Cold War between the U.S. and Russia-China. Others say that national boundaries are disappearing and being replaced by social media revolutions. This course will look at the world of cyberwarfare and AI in literature, discussing the question of identity and what it means to be human in a world that is both rapidly changing in terms of its biology and also inundated with weaponized social media. We will read contemporary science fiction novels like Kazuo Ishiguro's Klara and the Sun, Ursula K. Le Guin's The Lathe of Heaven, and M.T. Anderson's Feed. We will also read the nonfiction book, The is Not Propaganda: Adventures in the War Against Reality. (Cross listed with PEA_ST 4005)
