Advanced survey of major dramatic movements, periods, writers. Repeatable to a maximum of 6 hours with instructor's consent. Prerequisites: Honors eligibility required. Recommended: Senior standing.
Using a phenomenological approach, students will explore the major Latinx voices of drama in the US, looking at both established dramatists such as Rene Marques (The Oxcart) Luis Valdez (Zoot Suit), María Irene Fornés (Conduct of Life), Migdalia Cruz (Roosters), Jose Rivera (Marisol) , Eduardo Machado (Broken Eggs), John Leguizamo (Mambo Mouth) and Caridad Svich (The House of the Spirits), Dolores Prida (Coser y cantar) as well as more recent voices such as Elaine Romero (Title IX), Quiara Hudes (Water by the Spoonful), Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights), Nilo Cruz (Anna in the Tropics), Karen Zacarías (founder of Latinx Commons), Josephina Lopez (Real Women Have Curves), Anne García-Romero (author of The Fornes Frame), Cusi Cram (All the Bad Things), Carmalita Tropicana, (Milk of Amnesia), among many others.
