Course Description
In this course, we will look at the impact of European colonialism on the people they colonized, primarily in Africa in India. We will read theorists who wrote about how to cope with the violence they encountered, whether through fighting back or subtly attempting to undermine foreign rule. We will also learn about how, in a postcolonial environment, leaders learned to build nations. Finally, in the end of the course, we will compare European colonialism to Russian imperialism, comparing the ways in which contemporary Russia has theorized the idea of dominating its neighbors, as well as the rhetorical strategies they have used.
