Course Description

Cross listed with WGST 3480-01

This class looks at the possible ways emotions and “affect” can interact with gender and sexuality in literature and film. Stretching from cross-dressing in Shakespeare to “meet cutes” in contemporary romantic comedies, this class will seek to answer questions like, “What do emotions DO?” and “How can emotions generate social norms surrounding gender and sexuality?” Throughout this course, students will develop skills in analyzing and interpreting different genres of literature and film from the Renaissance to the present day.
