Course Description

(Cross-listed with FILMS_VS 2830)

This course is designed to be an examination of American film history from the beginnings of cinema to around 1950. To this end, we will screen a variety of films (from The Great Train Robbery to King Kong to Sunset Boulevard), look at numerous historical and critical readings, and in our discussions approach each film from the perspectives of form, narrative, genre, and historical and cultural context.
