Intermediate Poetry expands on the foundations of writing and interpreting poems that students learned and practiced in English 1530 (Introduction to Poetry). In this course students will engage with more ambitious poetic approaches in order to deepen the sense of how poems are crafted. We will read and discuss chapbooks and full-length collections that highlight different approaches to building toward a larger poetic project, with an emphasis on contemporary American poets. The workshop model learned in Introduction to Poetry, in which students collaborate by responding to one another’s poems in writing and in person, is central to this course.
