Creative Writing: Intermediate Nonfiction Prose
Ekphrastic Nonfiction
In this generative writing workshop, students will engage with many different styles and forms of creative prose. With an emphasis on nonfiction inspired by art in other genres and/or mediums, students will learn to identify, analyze, and employ diverse narrative strategies. Through collaborative-learning and constructive critique, students will have opportunities to practice craft elements of creative nonfiction while examining the aesthetic choices of authors like Roxane Gay, Carmen Maria Machado, Hanif Abdurraqib, Hua Hsu, Terrance Hayes, Kelefa Sanneh, and many others. This course will utilize contemporary readings on literature, and recent nonfiction anthologies, to aid students in finding a place for their own work and creative interests in the current landscapes of publishing and higher learning.
