Creative Writing: Intermediate Fiction: Writing Stories Only You Can Write
George Saunders described a writer’s “iconic space” as “the place from which they will write the stories only they could write, using what makes them uniquely themselves—their strengths, weaknesses, obsessions, peculiarities, the whole deal.” In this class, we will focus on achieving our iconic space as we practice the art and craft of fiction writing, with particular emphasis on the short story. Our practice will include focused reading, guided writing exercises, and peer workshop, during which students and instructor provide supportive and constructive feedback that aspires to motivate as well as to improve. Ideally, this course will help students articulate and develop their personal aesthetic sensibilities while also deepening their knowledge and understanding of the craft of fiction writing.
