Course Description

In this introductory course, students will observe, invent, and practice skills of poetic craft such as voice, image, sound, line, and form. Students will develop an understanding of their own poetic voice through observation, self-reflection, conversation, tribute, critique, mindfulness, creative play, and experimentation. Course work will include generative exercises, drafts of student poems, reflections in response to craft essays and poetry readings, and participation in class discussions and workshops. In addition to receiving instructor feedback, students will practice giving and receiving feedback as a member of a supportive community of writers. In the first half of the course, students will practice a variety of instructor-guided feedback models. In the second half of the course, students will have the opportunity to choose their own feedback methods with instructor support. At the end of this course, students will compile a final portfolio of revised poems and compose a statement of their own aesthetic values.
