Course Description

In this introduction to writing poetry, we will discover how poems think, feel, sound, speak and move to create meaning, and will use that awareness to craft poems of our own. We will read poems published online by various authors such as Yusef Komunyakaa, Brigit Pegeen Kelly, Paige Lewis, Kathryn Nuernberger and others, as well as two contemporary books of poetry: The Arrival by Daniel Simko and The Last Time I Saw Amelia Earhart by Gabrielle Calvocoressi. Students will gain foundational knowledge through exploring craft elements like image, line, sound, rhythm and form. Students will engage in various writing exercises, discussions, reflective activities and workshops throughout the semester, with an emphasis on learning how to collaborate and meaningfully comment on each other’s work. The course will culminate in a portfolio of revised creative work.
