Creative Writing: Introduction to Fiction
Creative Writing: Introduction to Fiction
“What is the world for if you can’t make it up the way you want it?”
– Toni Morrison, Jazz
In this course, we will read and examine various works of contemporary short fiction which showcase the powers of hope, levity, and humor even as they engage with challenging realities. We’ll explore a wide range of models for genre, voice, and form to understand the regenerative powers and possibilities of fiction. We’ll also consider how storytelling works to make meaning on individual and community levels. By the end of this course, we’ll understand the tools, vocabulary, and storytelling elements present in the contemporary fiction landscape. We will begin by engaging in discussions of assigned reading—craft essays and stories freely available within the online literary community—and experimenting with writing prompts before transitioning to peer-led story discussions and instructor-facilitated peer workshop of student work. Students will have the opportunity to write and workshop two original flash pieces and one original short story, present an outside story of their choice, and practice revision—all toward the goal of becoming active members of a bright and vibrant writing community.
