Course Description

This class introduces students to the craft of creative writing, as well as to being part of a literary community of authors, co-authors, readers, and editors. We will learn different approaches to making and revising our own imaginative literature, as well as how to be useful to others doing the same. Students will produce writing in three broad genres (poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction), while expanding their awareness of just how diverse these genres can be by reading, discussing, and emulating dynamic published examples by writers like Meena Alexander, Margaret Atwood, Guillaume Apollinaire, Aimee Bender, Victoria Chang, Neil Gaiman, Joy Harjo, Jamaica Kincaid, Sabrina Orah Mark, Michael Ondaatje, Kay Ryan, Mark Strand, Elisa Washuta, Oscar Wilde, Joy Williams, and many others.
