Internship in Publishing: Persea Books and Persea Books online
This course is a unique opportunity for a deep dive into contemporary poetry and literary publishing. Students will do essential work on behalf of the poetry series of Persea Books, an esteemed publishing house based in New York City. Persea has published some of the country's most dynamic and diverse contemporary poets, including Cameron Awkward-Rich, Molly McCully Brown, Gabrielle Calvocoressi, Randall Mann, Valencia Robin, Patrick Rosal, and Alexandra Teague.
Students completing the internship receive 3.0 course credits, as well as, if applicable, credit toward the English major , MA, or PhD. Expected workload is approximately ten hours a week, including a weekly synchronous meeting on Fridays from 1:00pm-2:40pm. All student work will be done on MU campus as with any conventional course. (Students in an on-line program may apply for enrollment in the on-line Persea section.)
Student projects may include reading and reporting on manuscript submissions, writing press releases, doing web research for book covers and publicity outlets, proofing book galleys, assisting with author tours and promotion, and co-administering contests. Interested students will also have the opportunity to gain familiarity with some practical (and resumé-building) facets of the book publishing business, such as contracts, subsidiary rights, and copyright application.
To apply, please complete an application form. Applications received by October 15 will be prioritized, but those received thereafter will be considered, if space remains available.
