Course Description

Explore linguistic diversity through Syntax! This class provides a comprehensive introduction to the structure of words, phrases, and sentences in the languages of the world via problem-solving and analysis. Students will engage with languages from around the globe, learning to carry out morphosyntactic analysis on diverse and often unfamiliar languages, exploring grammatical phenomena such as agreement, case, and processes that change grammatical relations. By examining the structure of verbs in Swahili, the word order of Japanese, the case system of Azerbaijani, and the form of causatives in Modern Hebrew, students will gain a profound appreciation for the diversity and complexity of human language.

While there are no prerequisites for this course, it is recommended that students have completed at least one prior course in Linguistics or a language structure course. This course serves as a core prerequisite for the capstone course of the Linguistics major, LING 4870, Field Methods in Linguistics.

Join us to deepen your understanding of the world's languages and enhance your analytical skills in the field of linguistics!
