Course Description

Nothing is ever entirely new. Every story carries echoes of other stories, sounds, histories, and forms. This workshop will explore how nonfiction writers borrow, sample, reorchestrate, and transform existing narratives, texts, archives, pop culture, and personal history to create vibrant new texts. Like music producers, these writers layer voices, bend genre conventions, and revise source material to generate meaning and surprise. We’ll look at popular literary remixers like Hanif Abdurraqib, Claudia Rankine, Maggie Nelson, and Ocean Vuong. Through close readings, discussions, generative prompts, and collaborative workshops, we’ll experiment with remix as a creative method. Emphasis will be placed on revision at both the sentence and structural level, making this course ideal for writers beginning new projects as well as those reshaping work already in progress.
