Creative Writing: Intermediate Nonfiction Prose
Creative Writing: Intermediate Nonfiction Prose
This intermediate nonfiction prose workshop will offer writers a space to explore the world of creative nonfiction (a genre that can encompass memoir, humor, mythology, the speculative, and more!) in a more focused environment. In this course, we will cultivate a trusting, attentive environment where students can contemplate the world around them, weaving their experiences into prose. Looking at work from nonfiction writers like Carmen Maria Machado, Hanif Abdurraqib, and Toni Jensen, we will read for inspiration, experiment with various nonfiction forms, and practice techniques for developing plot, character, tension, and more in our own work. We will also consider questions of process and ethics in nonfiction writing like, "What does it mean to tell others’ stories?", "What do I want to write?" and "How can I care for myself when writing about difficult experiences and topics?”
