Course Description

What is genre? And how does our understanding of this word shape the way we write our stories? In this course, we will ask this question by reading stories from different genres of writing—fairy tale, science fiction, fantasy, realism, horror, mystery, and more. What makes a story belong to one genre and not another? Can we anticipate what genre our story might belong to before writing it? To what extent do we ever have control over the end point of our own writing? As a class, we will experiment and write into and with the idea of genre, as well as read and think deeply about contemporary fiction and each other’s writing. Class will be spent doing some combination of discussing readings, attempting in-class exercises inspired by the readings or other materials, and sharing work as a part of in-class workshops.
