GN_HON 2015HW (same as ENGLSH 2015HW) Theory and Practice of Tutoring Writing (3 credit hours)
• Meets Humanities Requirement for Gen Ed
• Writing Intensive Section (Prerequisite: ENGLSH 1000)
“Theory and Practice of Tutoring Writing” is an Honors and Writing Intensive (WI) course taught by Dr. Aaron Harms, Director of the Writing Center, and Dr. Bailey Boyd, Assistant Director of the Writing Center. The class addresses both the theory and practice of tutoring and the foundations of good writing across multiple genres. Students will be introduced to writing center scholarship and theory and will complete 4 different essays in class as well as a total of 10 tutoring appointment observations throughout the semester.
This course fulfills Humanities, Honors, and WI credits, and also prepares students to work as writing tutors in the Writing Center. Doing well in the course allows the Writing Center to offer students a paid position beginning the following fall or spring after completing the course. Enrolling in the course assumes that students will be able to accept that part-time job if it’s offered to them.
During the class, we will talk about the value of the tutoring job and how to transfer tutoring skills to job applications and future positions. Skills students will acquire or improve upon include:
- Command of writing in different genres and for different audiences
- Command of in-person and written communication
- Analysis of varied writing assignments and frameworks
- Ability to both identify grammar patterns and teach corrections to those patterns
- Enhancement of efficient writing process and drafting strategies
This class meets Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays from 2:00-2:50pm. Students with questions can contact Dr. Aaron Harms at harmsaa@missouri.edu or Dr. Bailey Boyd at baileyboyd@missouri.edu for more information.
