Course Description

We’ve all heard a tale or two that started with “once upon a time” and ended with a “happily ever after.” Fairy tales are an age-old genre that spans thousands of years and, in this half-semester course, we’ll examine its beginnings and also trace its legacy to present day. For instance, we will analyze the classic folk tale “Little Red Riding Hood” (1697, 1812), as well as Angela Carter’s adaptation, “The Company of Wolves” (1984). In addition, we will consider the sociological parameters of these texts, asking questions such as: “How have these texts been used to establish moral and ethical values?” and “how do adaptations of these texts reflect changing cultural attitudes?” Major assignments will include close readings, film reviews, writing & responding to discussion questions, and creative options for the final project.
