Course Description

In this workshop, students will develop as poets and as compassionate, fruitful responders to others' poetry. They will build on skills that they have already developed (perhaps in English 1500 or 1530) and add to their repetoire of how to conceptualize, write, revise, and perform poetry. Students will also continue to expand their roles as literary citizens, considering how to support (and in turn be supported by) other writers and artists, which may include collaborative or multimedia projects. Weekly writing assignments, along with a commitment to revision, will eventually lead students to complete a chapbook as their final project.

Throughout the term, we will read widely and deeply, including work by a wide array of authors, including Agha Shahid Ali, Hala Alyan, Cameron Awkward-Rich, Linda Bierds, Samuel T. Coleridge, Rita Dove, Seamus Heaney, Anthony Hecht, Li-Young Lee, Maurice Manning, John Murillo, bp nichol, Mary Oliver, Edwin Arlington Robinson, Patrick Rosal, and Kay Ryan.
