Creative Writing: Introduction to Fiction
Creative Writing: Introduction to Fiction
In “Genre[less] Fictions,” we will read and write genre fiction and/or “genreless” fiction—if such a thing really exists—and in doing so, we will explore and discuss the usefulness/uselessness of categorizing fiction by genre. Our writing practice will include in-class writing exercises and peer workshop, during which students and instructor provide supportive and constructive feedback that aspires to motivate as well as to improve. We will closely examine and practice core elements of fiction, including character, plot, point of view, description, setting, pacing, voice, and theme. By the end of the semester, each student will have completed a short story, a flash fiction, a chapter for a prospective novel, and a brief series of “linked fictions.”
