From John Steinbeck to bell hooks, this course will focus on some of the classics of American literature with a particular focus on post-WWII fiction. We will look at the historical context for the literature we are reading and discuss some of the major issues affecting American identity in the twentieth century--including world wars, immigration, financial crises, and the fight for civil rights.
