This course is intended to familiarize students with a wide variety of American literature. We will discuss plays, poetry, short stories, and non-fiction from early America to the present. During the class, we will discuss content, themes, literary terms, and other aspects of and ways of speaking about American literature. This course should teach students major literary terms and historical periods; what makes American literature uniquely American; how to analyze and interpret texts with a variety of conceptual approaches; and what differentiates various genres and mediums from others.
