In this course we will consider what poetry is, what poetry can do, and why it matters. It will be an introduction to both the reading and writing of poetry—two arts that are intertwined. Students will write their own poems, give and receive feedback, and develop analytical reading skills. In addition, students will engage with the writing community by attending a public reading. We will focus on the elements of craft by looking closely at a wide range of poems from various countries and time periods. Students will study sound, shape, meter/rhythm, metaphor, voice, and the line, and how they contribute to making meaning.
