Rebecca Solnit wrote, "The self only exists in reference to the rest of the world, no you without mountains, without sun, without sky." Together, we will practice the art and craft of fiction writing, with emphasis on the short story, by reading and writing stories that explore the relationship between place and person, including the ways in which places make persons and persons make places. Our practice will include guided writing exercises and peer workshop, during which students and instructor provide supportive and constructive feedback that aspires to motivate as well as to improve. We will closely examine and practice core elements of fiction, including character, plot, point of view, description, setting, pacing, voice, and theme. By the end of the semester, each student will have completed multiple short exercises, three full-length short stories, and one significant revision.
