In this course, we will focus on developing a strong poetic community that emphasizes cooperative efforts to produce, critique, and analyze poetry of many different forms and styles. The class will be workshop oriented and will allow every student the space to write their own creative work and discuss that work critically with the other members of our community. Further, we will spend time reading and analyzing several full collections from major American authors such as Natasha Trethewey, Claudia Rankine, Rita Dove, and others. Having established a productive workshop space and the skills necessary to develop and revise your work, we will also explore aspects of the poetic process beyond the workshop, such as literary publishing, giving poetry readings, and manuscript development.
