Creative Writing: Advanced Fiction: Shape Shifters
What are the defining features of fiction? What, if anything, distinguishes a story from an essay, poem, play, or song? In this workshop, we will test those boundaries by tracing the narrative potential in a number of forms: tarot cards and short-shorts, ballads, plays, novels, science writing, and speculative fiction. Students will write three short stories and choose one for expansion/revision. We will also engage in a number of in-class exercises and group writing projects. Texts will include:The Ballad of the Sad Café (novella) by Carson McCullers, Father Comes Home from the Wars (play) by Suzan Lori-Parks, All This Could Be Yours (novel) by Jami Attenberg, All the Birds in the Sky (fantasy) by Charlie Jane Anders, 2018 Best American Science and Nature Writing (essays), and Oculus (poetry collection) by Sally Wen Mao.
