Scholarships and Prizes

Scholarships for English Majors

The Department of English offers a number of scholarship awards to English majors and also encourages its majors to apply for similar awards from the College of Arts and Science. The 2009 scholarships are open to students who plan to enroll fall 2009 and/or winter 2010. Students scheduled to graduate in May 2009 or August 2009 are not eligible for these scholarships.

Students who wish to apply for scholarships from the College of Arts and Sciences are recommended to have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and submit the following materials:

  1. Undergraduate Scholarship Application cover sheet
  2. Brief student resume
  3. Unofficial transcript of college work to date
  4. No more than 2 letters of reference

Please submit materials to the Arts & Sciences Dean's Office (3rd floor Lowry Hall) by 5 p.m. on January 23, 2009.

Scholarships designated for undergraduate English majors include the Professor Hardin Craig Scholarship and the Mabel Owen Scholarship. English majors who have a GPA of 3.3 or higher who wish to be considered for college and/or departmental awards should submit the following materials:

  1. Undergraduate Scholarship Application cover sheet
  2. Brief student resume
  3. Unofficial transcript of college work to date
  4. No more than 2 letters of reference
  5. A portfolio of 2 or 3 examples of writing from an English class

Prizes open to all majors

Essay Contests
The English Department presents the following prizes, available to all undergraduate students:

  • The Peggy Ewing Award, given to the best undergraduate paper on pre-20th-century British literature. Papers, at least five pages long, must be nominated by an instructor. Papers may be revised and are generally due in late January. The $500 prize is awarded during Arts and Science Week.
  • The Mahan Freshman Essay Contest

Creative Writing Contests
The Creative Writing Program within the Department of English also offers the following prizes for undergraduate students. For more details about these awards, please consult Creative Writing Contests.

  • The Francis W. Kerr Writing Prize for excellence in writing in fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry
  • The Academy of American Poets Prize
  • The McKinney Short Fiction Award
  • The Mahan Writing Awards in fiction and poetry
  • The Creative Writing Nonfiction Prize
  • The Sibyl Pommer Freshmen Poetry Prize
  • The Margaret Leong Children's Poetry Prize
