Undergraduate Studies

Welcome!

The English Department at Mizzou offers undergraduate students the opportunity to study with dedicated teachers who also happen to be prominent scholars in their academic fields. With highly approachable teachers and generally small class sizes, our students enjoy a learning environment that encourages them to think critically and express themselves effectively. This recipe is one of the reasons that English continues to rank among the most popular majors on campus.

This is an exciting time to major in English at Mizzou. Our department has grown to around 50 full-time faculty members, and we offer classes in a remarkably broad range of subject areas. You can study literature from around the world and from any historical period. You can also learn more about the theory and practice of writing through the study of composition and rhetoric or through the many classes offered by our faculty in creative writing. You can add even more breadth to your studies by taking advantage of our dynamic programs in folklore and in English language and linguistics. The English department also has close connections to programs such as Women's and Gender Studies, Black Studies, Film Studies, and the Program in Linguistics, and students may choose a minor in one of these areas.

The faculty of the English Department are committed to excellence in scholarship as well as teaching. We’re proud to have among us numerous winners of campus-wide teaching awards as well as recipients of book prizes and other scholarly accolades. You can learn more about the interests and accomplishments of our professors through our faculty pages. Our experience as researchers and writers enriches the classroom environment, and it also can lead to opportunities for undergraduate students to get involved in research outside their regular classes through independent studies or through assistantships funded by grants or programs such as the A&S Research Mentorship.

If you have questions about our undergraduate curriculum, please contact me (573-882-8739, evelevj@missouri.edu) or our undergraduate advisor Mary Moore (573-882-6421, mooremc@missouri.edu). We are here to help you.
