Scholarships for English Majors

The scholarships listed below are available only for the 2014-2015 academic year. Please carefully review the particular requirements for each scholarship.

 
Scholarships Open to all English Majors

 

English Alumni Scholarship: 2 undergraduate scholarships of $1000 each available.

2013-2014 Prize Recipient: Tegan Blackwood
2012-2013 Prize Recipients: Jaclyn Herr and Arriana Hayes.

 

This scholarship, funded by English Department alumni and created by the English Department Leaders Board, is given to outstanding undergraduate English majors. Among equally-qualified candidates, preference will be given to students with some financial need.

 

To apply for an Alumni scholarship, English majors should submit the following materials to the English Department main office by 5 pm on March 17, 2014.

  1. English Department Scholarship Application Cover Sheet
  2. Resume
  3. Unofficial transcript
  4. A one-page essay on the topic: Describe the most important skill you are developing as an English major.
  5. Evidence of financial need. If you currently receive financial aid, you do not need to provide additional paperwork. If you do not receive financial aid, you should provide a one-page statement explaining your financial need conditions.
Scholarships Open to English Majors with a 3.0 GPA or higher

 

Mabel Owen Scholarship:  

2013-2014 Prize Recipients: Enrique Meijia and Kristin Carranza
2012-13 Prize Recipients: Edward Hart, Grace McNamee and Karlyn Skinner.

 

Marian Lindsey Smith Scholarship:  
Applicants for the Marion Lindsey Smith Scholarship should also provide a demonstration of financial need, either through financial aid records or by personal statement.

2012-13 Prize Recipients: Enrique Mejia and Charnissia Smith

 

Professor Hardin Craig Scholarship
Applicants for the Professor Hardin Craig Scholarship must demonstrate financial need through financial aid records.

To apply for the Smith, Owen, and/or Craig scholarships, English majors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher should submit the following materials to the English Department Main Office by March 17, 2014.

 

  1. English Department Scholarship Application Cover Sheet
  2. Brief student resume
  3. Unofficial transcript of college work to date
  4. No more than 2 letters of reference
  5. A portfolio of 2 or 3 examples of writing from an English class

For Marian Lindsey Smith Scholarship only: Evidence of financial need. If you currently receive financial aid, you do not need to provide additional paperwork. If you do not receive financial aid, you should provide a one-page statement explaining your financial need conditions.

 

For Professor Hardin Craig Scholarship only: Financial need to be determined only by Office of Financial Aid; students do not need to provide additional paperwork.
