Patrologia Latina Database - PLD
Overview:
The Patrologia Latina Database is an electronic and fully searchable version of the 221 volumes of the Patrologia latina series. The series provides editions of Latin works written from 200 AD to 1216, from the Church Fathers to the theologians and philosophers of the early Middle Ages. The volumes provide the best editions of most of the many thousands of works contained in them, and are necessary to those who research late-anitque or medieval religion, philosophy, literature, and history, as well as being an important tool for art historians, historians of music, and others. More than 150 academic libraries in the United States subscribe to the database, including not just Ivy League universities but many state universities, such as the University of Tennessee and Ohio State University. Important Features:
Searchable database of thousands of texts
The 221 volumes of the Patrologia latina series were printed in the nineteenth century, in a compact format with dual-column pages and a very small font. In 1996, Chadwick-Healey Publishing completed its creation of a fully searchable electronic database of these texts. Subscribers can search within a particular volume or text or search all of the volumes simultaneously.
Accessiblity
The PLD makes a treasury of Latin texts simultaneously available to faculty and students from any computer, on campus or at home.
Advantages for Faculty and Students at MU:
Faculty Testimonials
Comprehensiveness and efficiency
It is impossible to read through all of the volumes of the print Patrologia in the course of one's research, but the electronic version makes it possible to search for keywords and themes in all the volumes of the series in a matter of seconds. It therefore enables scholars to be comprehensive and accurate in their research, as well as allowing them to find sources they would not otherwise know about. This resource makes it possible for scholars to perform work they simply could not do without it. Databases such as this raise the standard of research expected from scholars, and our acquisition of the PLD would allow our faculty and students to remain competitive.
Graduate student training
The PLD is integral to the project of teaching graduate students to become expert researchers.
Faculty retention
The acquisition of the PLD will help MU to attract and retain the best faculty in these fields. The university cannot remain competitive if it is more difficult for scholars to perform research here than it is elsewhere.
Advertised Price: The cost to acquire the PLD is $63, 339, with an annual access fee of $400. The bulk of the expense, therefore, comes with the acquisition.
