Library ResourcesEighteenth-Century Collections Online - ECCOOverviewThanks to the efforts of library committee members throughout 2005-2006, Ellis Library agreed to fund the acquisition of Eighteenth-Century Collections Online (ECCO). Our students and faculty have had access since January 2007. ECCO is a fully searchable database of 150,000 books published in English between the years 1700 and 1800. These include not only canonical works in the history of English literature, but books on science, philosophy, art, history, law, religion, political theory, social life, and more. The database offers not only high-quality digital images of every page, but a full-text search option which allows researchers to scan over 26 million pages of text for key words and phrases within a matter of seconds. Current faculty and students can access ECCO remotely over any internet connection, and the database is available to all users working from terminals in Ellis Library or at other on-campus locations. The following links provide detailed examples of how our classes and our research have benefited from access to ECCO. These testimonials also support the case for acquiring additional databases such as EEBO and PLD, which would carry the same kinds of benefits for additional groups of users. Links |
