The Bible in English
Database Acquired
The committee voted to allocate the Spring 08 balance of our firm order budget for new scholarly monographs to fund the one-time cost of this database. The minimal recurring cost will be handled by reallocating a few journal subscriptions.
Overview
The most basic text for the study of European thought from the medieval period through the Renaissance is, of course, the Bible. The Bible in English is a relatively inexpensive online database that provides total comparative access to the texts of 20 versions of the Bible, including all of the important translations of the early modern period. The cost is $400 a year after a one-time initiation fee of $3881.
Complete, searchable access to all relevant material
There are many non-subscription Internet sites for Bible study, most of them sponsored by religious groups of various sorts. However, all of these sites are designed for searching and comparing verses from the Bible. The Bible in English is the only database that we're aware of that includes not only the texts but all of the glosses and commentary in the major English translations. As any scholar who has studied the early modern period is aware, the glosses to texts are an extremely rich source of historical and cultural information, touching on a wide range of topics. Using The Bible in English to do a keyword search on a term such as "justification," the researcher will discover not only the use of that term in scripture but also how generations of commentators employed it over time. Having all of this information available in a single database would be a real advantage to both teachers and students working on earlier English literature and history.
Value across disciplines
This database would be a great resource for Religious Studies, History, Classics, Art History and other humanities-oriented departments and programs in the College of Arts and Science.
