Derek Updegraff

Derek Updegraff is a new PhD admit with a primary focus in medieval literature. At present, he is interested in all aspects of Anglo-Saxon and Middle English poetry. He also attends the graduate poetry-writing workshops and studies the uses of traditional forms and measures in modern verse. In his own writing, he delights in the challenge of utilizing meter without sounding too archaic or bouncy. The study of prosody is just one aspect that bridges his interests in medieval and contemporary poetry. While taking classes toward the PhD, he is finishing up an MA in literature with an emphasis in language and linguistics; he holds an MFA in fiction writing and a BA in English from Cal State Long Beach. His writing has appeared in a number of literary journals, including The Lyric, The Chiron Review, Light, The Classical Outlook: Journal of the American Classical League, The Raintown Review, descant, Iambs & Trochees, Bellowing Ark, and The Deronda Review, and he has recently had two forty-page chapbooks published by Doom-Ah Books, a small press located in Oakland, California. Before returning to graduate school at the University of Missouri, he taught English at San Diego Mesa College and basic writing at the University of California, San Diego.
