Program Description
The University of Missouri Department of English offers a special emphasis in African Diaspora Studies at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Defined broadly to include the literatures, theories, folklore, film, and cultures of the English-speaking African Diaspora, these concentrations include courses in African American literature, African literature, Black British literature, film, Africana folklore, Africana theory, and Africana women's literature.
Undergraduate English Majors wishing to complete the emphasis in African Diaspora Studies take three courses within the emphasis area. To receive the MA emphasis in African Diaspora Studies, students must complete 12 hours of course work within the emphasis area, including English 8410, Africana Theory and Literary Criticism.
